Carl Bäckstrand is a partner and deputy CEO of White Arkitekter, Scandinavia’s thought-leader in sustainable architecture. Facing the challenges of climate change, rapid urbanisation and social injustice, White work across disciplines with architects, anthropologists, engineers, biologists, and landscape architects. They co-design with local partners to manage such different contexts as a new masterplan in Kisumu, Kenya; the relocation of the City of Kiruna in Sweden’s Arctic north; or affordable housing in central London. White’s engagement in East Africa started back in the 1970s, and the practice is currently working on the Panzi hospital in Bukavo, the Leadership Center and the GoDown Art Center in Nairobi.
After gaining a Masters degree in Architecture at Lund University, Carl studied Landscape architecture at Royal Academy of Arts in Copenhagen, and Urban Design as a Visiting Scholar at MIT Cambridge MA. A member of the Executive Board of Architects Council of Europe and of ARQ research foundation, Carl contributes to bringing the business closer to science and building new strategic partnerships, striving to improve the building industry´s commitment and delivery on the Global Goals required to alleviate climate crisis.
